Box Canyon House
Telluride, Colorado
6,484 SF New Construction
Completed 2023
Sited at the end of the box canyon, with views of the surrounding peaks and alpine waterfalls, this family home was designed to replace the double-wide, erected on the site in the 1970’s.
The homeowner bought the property in the late 1990’s when she relocated to Telluride. Over the years, her grandchildren were born, their Colorado visits became more frequent and the house more crowded. In 2021, she decided it was time to build a family house that could accommodate herself, her children and grandchildren and the many dogs that are part of the extended family.
The new wood-clad structure was designed to meet the needs of an active, outdoor-loving, multigenerational family, with ages ranging from newborn to 84 years old and a primary goal of maximizing the spectacular views in all directions.
The living and dining room area, the kitchen and all four bedrooms enjoy giant windows onto the landscape, whether it be the glorious Bridal Veil Falls, the red rock walls lining the canyon or a hillside replete with Aspen trees.
Stone, quarried in Colorado, is used throughout the house while the pale grey palette of the exterior was selected for its subtle complement to the range of stunning colors that characterize the landscape throughout the seasons.
The public spaces are open, large and light-filled, whereas the private spaces, such as the second-floor bedrooms, offer family members an escape from the chaos. Located well away from the adult sleeping quarters, is a bunk room, with a large television, an ensuite bathroom and sliding barn door. The house has an elevator for transporting luggage, people, dogs and the young children who simply enjoy going for a ride.
New coniferous trees were carefully placed and integrated amongst the old growth pines and aspen groves. Meadows replete with wildflowers bloom in the summer and a cedar soaking tub sits 20 yards from the house, providing hours of soaking underneath the starry sky.
